Hi there I'm about to purchase 4 raspberry pis as I would like to learn more about servers, networking and other such things to connect them together I know I will need a switch, do any of you recommend a switch to use? Would a cheap 2nd hand cisco switch do fine for this task?

Any switch will do, the RPi does not have any specific requirements on that part. So if you can get a cheap (second hand or new) 100 MBit switch, do not hesitate. And Cisco is generally not considered trash, so for sure that will work just fine!
