In my case the culprit is 100% the connection between the HDMI cable and the Pi - enthusiastic remating (really jamming the cable in there) fixes the problem temporarily. Can you replace the HDMI cable, or test a male-female adapter between the converter and the Pi? | |

Check /var/log/syslogand see if there were any errors around the time it happened.
