I have a Bio metric attendance machine, it creates a attendance report and it has a usb port where we can put pendrive to get the attendance reports but instead of pendrive i want to use raspberry pi zero to get the attendance report.

I need help for the communication between these two devices

  • If you want to use a Pi Zero why have you tagged with pi-2. Are you actually using any of the other tags? – Milliways Aug 12 at 8:06
  • Does your attendance machine have the usual TCP/IP or RS485 option? If yes, you can use a RS485 to RS232 converter and talk UART serial with Rpi. Rpi can also talk TCP/IP but usually that is many times harder to do. – tlfong01 Aug 12 at 13:54
  • what's with the raspbmc tag? and both stretch and jessie tags? mucho tag spam going on here – Jaromanda X Aug 13 at 9:24
  • The attendance machine has only usb disk drive option for communication – shan Aug 13 at 10:46

The Raspberry Pi Zero can act as an USB disk drive or a HID device by setting the USB port to "OTG Mode" aka "USB Gadgets".

So by attaching the Raspberry Pi Zero to the "Bio metric attendance machines" USB port and The Raspberry Pi Zero is acting as a USB disk drive and it can read the files that the "Bio metric attendance machine" is writing.

The method is:

  1. Edit and add a new row to the bottom of the config.txt file.

  2. Add dtoverlay=dwc2 to the new line, then save the file.

  3. Edit cmdline.txt. Be careful with this file, it is very picky with its formatting! Each parameter is separated by a single space (it does not use newlines). Insert modules-load=dwc2,g_mass_storage after rootwait.

  • I connected the raspberry pi to attendance machine but on restart it connects and disconnects immediately – shan Aug 14 at 7:11
  • And where will be the downloaded file stored. – shan Aug 14 at 7:25
