We are looking to use raspberry pis to monitor banks of 12v batteries in a real world environment.

We currently are able to use a USB voltmeter from : http://www.digital-measure.com/html/usb_voltmeter.html to monitor voltage but would now like to add current monitoring to the system.

As this is being retro fitted onto an already live system we would like to use a clamp on ammeter to monitor current (preferably multiple meters on one pi).

Is this possible and is there any hardware already in existence to help with this?

We have already googled but so far have only found solutions for AC not DC circuits.

Current range is likely to be between 0-40amps.
