I'm trying to compile the kernel on a brand new install (pi4) using the following steps:

apt install raspberrypi-kernel-headers build-essential bc git wget bison flex libssl-dev make libncurses-dev mkdir kernel cd kernel git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux KERNEL=kernel7l When I run:

make bcm2711_defconfig

I get:

*** No rule to make target 'bcm2711_deconfig'. Stop ** [Makefile:534: bcm2711_deconfig] Error 2

I'm not an expert in compiling so I'm at a loss.

There's a mismatch there between make bcm_2711_defconfig and the error (bcm2711_deconfig). I'm guessing you cut n' past the latter but not the former and what you really typed was make bcm_2711_deconfig, which does not exist. – goldilocks May 14 '20 at 19:13

Did you see the notes from RPF on the local version string raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/kernel/building.md Have you considered either Yocto or Buildroot - both look a lot simpler if you are not skilled in this area though there is a great course at buildyourownlinux.com May I ask why you see the need to do this - pure curiosity on my part. – user115418 May 14 '20 at 20:05
  • Have a look at github.com/notro/rpi-source which gets you a working kernel source tree and kernel headers. – Dougie May 15 '20 at 0:08
