First thing is how are you using ssh? To IP address or name? Secondly, do you get any errors? Please update the question with this info (inc errors from ssh -v). Have you set Linux up to allow networking via USB? – Andyroo Nov 21 at 18:41

Have you tried using the "-v" argument to ssh? e.g. ssh -v user@hostname? This will let you view debug information and you can often work out where it is hanging. – Tim Campbell Nov 21 at 22:24
  • Please edit your question and add the output of the suggested command (ssh -v pi@<ip-address>). – Ingo Nov 22 at 10:06
