I have prepared a configuration image with:

  1. rpi wifi firmware
  2. mdev
  3. wpa_supplicant

configure network/interfaces to:

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

and wpa_supplicant.conf to:

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=root
ctrl_interface_group=0
update_config=1

network={
    ssid="Tenda_16A828"
    psk="12345678"
    proto=WPA
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    pairwise=CCMP
    auth_alg=OPEN
}

i tested the same ( just different group - to be pi) in raspbian and it does work fine.

as i understood, the wpa_supplicant should run automatically when it specified in the network/interface and i dont need to run it manually.

Can someone please help me to get the wifi working in buildroot for pi3 image?

Finally I managed to get it working:

Using the /etc/network/interfaces from here:
https://github.com/danielnilsson9/buildroot-rpi3

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
        wireless-essid "Tenda_16A828"
        wireless-key "12345678"
        pre-up wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -B
        post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant

and this wpa_supplicant.conf:

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=root
ctrl_interface_group=0
update_config=1

    network={
            ssid="Tenda_16A828"
            psk="12345678"
            proto=WPA
            key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
            pairwise=CCMP
            auth_alg=OPEN
    }

and of course the rpi-wifi firmware
I got the WiFi working with buildroot (of course, change the SSID and PSK to yours)
