I installed Red Hat Linux 5.0 on i386 probably in 1998, and then moved to Debian 2.1 (Slink) GNU/Linux some time around 2000.

Since then I have always had root on something. I try to be super when I can.

I have used enough Un*x flavours to recognise that they all have their differences. I reach in preference for the GNU tools when they are available.
