Oct 16, 2015 at 20:00 comment added goldilocks Since in all cases you would have to have an OS installed and running on the pi first, you might want to stop and consider XY problem -- if you just want to configure/update the system and backup/restore it online, there are better options than having to burn a whole card or partition image.

WRT installing an OS that way, obviously you have to have an OS running, so either you do the same thing (run from a USB stick, etc) or else you have a look at how NOOBs or BerryBoot works. Either way, there's not going to be a simple recipe to follow for this.
