Thanks for linking to my answer about nodm . I just updated it with more details about how to use nodm with Raspbian Lite to create a kiosk environment starting from scratch. If I understand correctly, nodm works the way that is desired regarding user login, because in the config file you can set NODM_USER to "pi" (or any username), and it works differently from other DMs like LightDM in that it doesn't require the boot behavior to be changed to automatic GUI login. If you're using nodm and press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to the terminal, you have to enter your password there.
