I am trying to add a custom certificate (.pem) to the local trusted certificate store in RPi 4 running buster (headless.)

I have tried the following:

Copy the custom certificate file in:

/usr/local/share/ca-certificates/
/etc/ca-certificates/
/usr/share/ca-certificates-java/
/usr/share/ca-certificates/local/
/etc/ssl/certs/

and run the following commands:

dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates
sudo update-ca-certificates

In all of the above combinations, I get 0 certs updated and I am unable to use the certificate in a Logstash (part of ELK stack) pipeline with the following error:

This is the error Jun 16 01:01:34 HOSTNAME logstash[4912]: Error: PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target

I've followed instructions from these two posts: Entrusted Certificates installation https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=204129
